Dior Addict Ultra Gloss in Black-Tie Plum #982

In case there is any confusion, I took the pictures below before my haircut. I know, I look like a totally different person.

While I am definitely enjoying the myriad of new lipstick offerings we have this season, I feel the need to shower some love to its glossier counterparts. If you can believe it, Dior Addict Ultra Gloss in Black-Tie Plum #982 was one of the first few glosses I owned.

I think it was my second semester at college. At that time I barely read beauty blogs and use little makeup (what I did to pass time, I wonder). The Dior SAs were friendly enough, and seeing my noobishness, plied me with every product they could sell me. I glanced through, nodding to be nice but wasn't committed until I saw this gloss. The SA told me they were the first and only high end brand that had such a deep gloss in its permanent collection. I don't know if that was true, but I will say till this day I haven't found a dark plum to rival this.

L-R: Dior Black-Tie Plum, Chanel Rouge Allure Rouge Noir

The eye look is basically LMdB Plum Eyeshadow layered above look 1 in this tutorial

On its own, Black-Tie Plum is a glossy wine-berry that can be layered to full intensity or sheered to a bare stain. Three years ago I thought it was the boldest shade ever (I wore it to college and felt like everyone was staring at me); now, I'd wear this to the market without skipping a beat. Ah, growth.

In the above pictures, I layered it over Chanel Rouge Noir to make it "seasonally fashionable." Dior's glosses are super comfortable and moisturizing, which is the unfortunate codeword for not long-lasting. It will come off with any food or drink, or even a simple swipe of tissue (you don't even have to rub).

A rudimentary Google search shows that there really isn't a ton of permanent edition dark plum glosses lying around, so if you're the glossy kind of girl and want the extra polish over a dark, vampy lip, this is it.

Dior Addict Ultra Gloss in Black-Tie Plum #982 retails for $28 and is available at Nordstrom.

  1. Looks great on you! I bought this about a year ago but put it on in the parking lot and promptly walked back into the store and returned it. I've never had an issues with products settling in my lip lines but with this it was TERRIBLE. Shame because it was such a pretty colour!

  2. I felt exactly the same when I wore a bold lip for the firt time (it took me some time to feel comfortable with), I thought everyone was staring at me as well. I think this was one of my first Dior glosses, Guerlain Kiss Kiss gloss in #867 Rosy Plum is also a nice alterantive to the Dior one. I think vampy, berry, deep colours look stunning on you, like you were made for those kinda colours / Claire

  4. This is gorgeous :) I think but am not sure that Bobbi Brown's high shimmer lip gloss has a couple shades similar, but not quite the same. In particular I'm thinking of Midnight Violet - http://www.temptalia.com/bobbi-brown-midnight-violet-high-shimmer-lipgloss-review-photos-swatches

    1. that's definitely more brown-based, but pretty nonetheless!

    2. I agree that the BB shade is definitely more brown. It also looks 'chunky' to me, it doesn't apply evenly. Some areas of the lip are covered with color and some are not - Hate that!

  5. I've been following your blog for quite a long time, never generate enough courage to leave a comment... Couldn't help but wanting to ask: what products you use to make your hair so shiny so black and so beautiful?!!!

    1. Thanks for commenting! I've always been thinking about doing a post on it, but I chopped off my hair...

My hair is what stylists consider "virgin" hair. I don't color, perm, and try not to do anything that might harm it (so I barely use heat-styling tools and use a heat protectant spray when I dry it). I don't really use hair products either, since someone told me it increases chances of bacne (back acne).

I shampoo with Shu Uemura Art of Hair oil cleansing shampoo, and my current conditioner is Kiehl's Rice & Wheat Volumizing Conditioner. Hope this answers your question :)

  6. Just beautiful- I love this shade!! I wonder what you think about your new haircut...do you love it as much as some of your subscribers? I'm so envious- one must be fairly blessed with a well-sculpted head/face in order to pull off a short cut. Thank you for the post ... xoxo Beth in Pgh

  10. I miss the description you had on your blog before ... something like "My mission is to make you buy things" because it's really true. I just bought this lip gloss. It's so pretty! I've worn it alone and layered over a red lipstick. I rarely comment on your posts (I visit your blog daily) but I also want to say that you've also made me buy Paul and Joe lipsticks (the one with the paper design cases).

    1. my (secret) mission is still to make you shamelessly buy things! but I'm hoping Messy Wands becomes more of a forum for beauty rather than a shopping site, that's why I took it down :)

  11. Your hair was so beautiful but you look so pretty with short hairdo. I admire your bravery, you´re very cute no matter how long hair is. What happend to your long hair, have you kept it for memory or it just fell to the floor? :-)

  12. I can't believe you chopped off ur silky long hair!!!!
Short hair does accentuate your cheek bone more!
