Guerlain Noir G Mascara

It's official, ladies. I found my HG mascara.

I usually try one and start thinking of the next one I have to get three months later. I got the Guerlain Noir G Mascara mid-January and knew I didn't have to look anymore. Now I'm wondering how long this will last me and when I'm supposed to get the refill.

Instructions on how to open this contraption

The mascara packaging resembles the famed Rouge G, though slightly different in mechanics. You're supposed to tug the handle till you hear a click, which will reveal the mirror handy for on-the-go touchups. Proceed to unscrew and whip up those lashes.

This mascara is ridiculous. Believe me, I was a skeptic when I first got it. The packaging is grand but a touch gimmicky. The tube is of a substantial weight, which makes me reluctant to lug it around in my bag, so I'm not exactly sure when the mirror would come in handy. Then there was all these claims Guerlain was making on the formula (volumizing, lengthening, curling, perfectly defined lashes) and the brush (perfect, fast, even distribution, easy to handle and glides everywhere). I purchased this buying into the marketing and hype and was prepared to be utterly let down.

No mascara

With Guerlain Noir G Mascara

But I wasn't! I don't even need to curl my lashes before I put the mascara on, it'll lift them up by itself (though for more drama I still suggest a routine pinch prior to application). It lengthens marvelously, and for volume all you have to do is put on a couple more coats. The formula is not heavy and does not clump (note: the most I've done is three layers). The mascara is also scented with the typical Guerlain floral, but you'll only be able to snatch a whiff during application.

Guerlain Noir G Mascara retails for $49 and the refills cost $26. I do apologize for this. It's such a painful amount for something you'll need to replace every three months or so. But well, it's always better to spend on something you'll love and finish than five things you'll hate and chuck.

Update: A reader tweeted to ask if the Noir G Mascara refill came with a new brush and @GuerlainUS replied saying it does! Ah, little things that make me happy.

  1. Oh this looks amazing! I have the thinnest lashes in the world and I need the best mascara to -at least- make my lashes visible. :/
the pricetag hurts, but beauty is pain, isn't it? lol

    thanks for the review btw!

  2. OK, you've managed to sell this mascara to me! I like how it wouldn't clump even after 3 coats, and if it curls my lashes on its own it's even better!

  3. I tried this at the Guerlain counter when I bought my Cruel Gardenia, and 3 hours later, it streaked and smudged like crazy :(

Probably because I've oily lids, but I really wanted to like it so much! Looks good on you though!

  4. Oh no! I've been lusting after this mascara, and your positive review makes me want to try it even more. Maybe I'll purchase it next time Sephora has a friends & family sale or something. I apply my mascara pretty heavy, so I run out in a month or so. That would be way too much for me to spend.

  5. I've been wearing Noir G since mid-January and think it is the best all-around mascara I've ever worn. The pigment is ultra black and does not flake or migrate during the day. The wand creates beautifully separated lashes that look long, lush, and which have a bit of curl. I find one coat during the day is perfect for a well defined, but natural look. For evening, a go with the eyelash curler and then two coats of mascara creates the coveted false lash look without any clumping. Guerlain has created a wonderful formula. I just wish the case weren't so heavy, but since I don't carry mascara with me, that's a very minor issue. Will I be purchasing a refill? Definitely!

  6. You don't need to curl your lashes? That's amazing! Love the packaging; though, as you said, it is quite gimmicky. But I can't believe how awesome your lashes look! I may need to try this when I'm off the ban :).

  8. Hi Xiao! I couldn't agree with you more on this product. This one product did what DiorShow Primer, Dior Iconic and Benefit Bad Gal did collectively. In essence, the $49 price tag is cheaper compared to the 3 products. The most outstanding quality for me about this product is its ability to separate lashes. I understand it's not the best mascara for all types of lashes but I think it's the HG for most. And I totally dig the hint of fragrance.

  10. I have it, but I found it weighed down my lashes :( I have stubborn straight lashes and after I've curled and applied this mascara, it just goes back to being straight. I'm trying to give it a chance though I agree about the non clumpy bit.

  12. I have this, and this is a great mascara - lengthening, but not particularly volumizing. I also did a review of it - but I still prefer RMK, L'Oreal, and Estee Lauder Mascaras.

  13. Noir G gives you such doll lashes! I've avoided this (partially because I'm head over heels for Chanel Inimitable Intense) because I was convinced I'd be disappointed ... you've given me hope.

  15. My wallet will be happy - my sensitive eyes can't take fragranced mascaras - but my heart is sad that I can't try this out!! It just looks amazing, and it really looks wonderful on you, but I guess it's just not in the cards for me. Perhaps I'll give it as a present so I can live vicariously??
